How to Treat Yourself This Valentine’s Day

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. We’d be lying if we said Valentine’s Day hasn’t completely lost its charm, become overly commercialised, or even exclusive… to those who have a love life.

BUT HEY: if February 14 is about celebrating relationships, then, the most important relationship we need to get right is the one we have with ourselves. And loving yourself begins in the small actions of self-care in the everyday, an ongoing practice that’s worth the investment.

So, we’ll be over here celebrating… us. Her. You, and me. Relationship status? Committed to inner peace, expansion, gratitude, and self-love.

We think it’s high time that this holiday got a refresh. This Valentine’s Day, we are taking back the V’DAY narrative by declaring it a celebration of our own well-being and happiness!

Here’s the run-down on how we’ll be celebrating AKA ruling our queendom this February:

1. BOOK A SPA DAY

1-spaday

Always thought this was too indulgent? Well, we think you & I deserve every bit of this indulgence. Imagine a carefree day of massages and facials, without the incessant buzzing from your phone. Use the time to properly unplug, silencing the inevitable worries and anxieties of life.

Contrary to popular belief, there are some relatively accessible spa options that won’t break the bank. Massage houses like House of Traditional Javanese Massage offers head to toe massages for just $60 for non-members ($45 for members). Relatively new on the spa scene in Singapore are Japanese-inspired Onsens like Yunomori Onsen and Spa (only $38 per entry).

Fave is also a go-to platform for girls on a budget, looking to treat themselves. We’re already eyeing this 3-Hour spa package (includes a massage, facial and other treatments) for just $45 - SCORE.

2. TAKE YOURSELF OUT ON A DATE

"Table for one, please."

Just kidding - we’re not THAT extreme. All power to the girls who eat alone, we salute you! But if, like us, you’re still wrestling with the social-anxiety monster, there’s definitely no shame in that.

Our suggestion is to start small. There are many other activities you might just enjoy; maybe even prefer doing alone - like reading a book at a cafe. Visiting a museum. Trying a spin/yoga/pilates class for the first time. Listening to a podcast in the park. The possibilities are endless.

Pro-tip: here’s a list of recs from our LB co-founder, Rach herself!
Cafe: Humpback - “Amazing, affordable oysters, love the great staff and service!”
Book: Self-Care for the Real World
Podcast: Oprah’s Supersoul Conversations
Netflix show: Madam Secretary

3. PEN DOWN 5 THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF & WANT TO WORK ON THIS YEAR

Here’s a freebie on the list. It doesn’t cost you anything, but you’d be surprised at the wonders it does for your mental wellbeing. We all spend too much time focusing on what’s WRONG with us - that we might have trouble remembering there’s also so much that’s RIGHT. And it can truly be any 5 things, down to personality and quirky traits — all acceptable answers. Our only note: be specific!

Remember: loving yourself is a cultivated habit, it doesn’t come naturally. When you intentionally articulate the things you love about yourself, it becomes easy to find the motivation to work on yourself.

We don’t necessarily mean a makeover… although, your overall look could very well be something you want to work on. We’re talking about letting go of anxiety, building deeper relationships, growing in your current skills, picking up a new hobby, volunteering more, and the list goes on.

4. GO ON A SHOPPING SPREE

5. CELEBRATE GALENTINE'S WITH YOUR GAL PAL

At the end of the day, you can feel lonely, but you’re not alone. Sometimes, one really good friend is all you need.

So gather your BFF, your partner in crime, your sister from another mister  — we’re gonna make a day of it! Do points 1-4 together: enjoy a girls day at the spa, go shopping together or plan a picnic at the park. You know each other best, do something that both of you will enjoy.

Most importantly, celebrate the fact that you can do you, and do life together. If today is about who you are, then that’s enough reason to party!
